Summer timeWe hope you have been enjoying every minute of this beautiful summer as much as we have. In these difficult times in our homeland and abroad, it becomes even more important to smell the roses, feel the sun’s warmth, listen to the laughter, and enjoy every minute with our loved ones.

This summer, I will have attended two beautiful weddings in Montana and Pittsburgh. Both are such meaningful occasions that fill my heart with love and gratitude. When not busy building Sweets Gone Raw, I am giving thanks to my health. I give thanks to my body for allowing me to enjoy running, yoga, and my new love, Pilates. I continue to learn something new about myself in every fitness venture and often find myself applying these skills to everyday life’s challenges.

As summer winds down, and back to school gets closer, life becomes more routine again. Guilty feelings of summer indulgences may be lingering around the waistline. Or perhaps you have fallen off track completely and decided to hit the “reset” button when the kids go back to school. Our bodies are very forgiving and naturally detoxifying when given the chance. Studies show that it just takes 30 days to break a habit. This explains the 30 day Challenge phenomenon. 

Now, is a better time than ever to start eating clean. Whether this be for weight loss or overall well-being, you have picked the right time. There are more less- processed, delicious, and affordable choices than ever at most grocery stores and online. We are more excited than ever to be amongst those brands that share our philosophy of healthy eating.

On the GoWhether you’re taking a long trip or are simply in a rush to make it to your meeting in time, eating well is an act that is often forsaken when there is not a lot of time or you’re far from home. While eating well when on-the-go certainly takes a little planning, doing so is not impossible. Here are some tips to help you make smart choices even when you’re pressed for time or in the middle of transit:

Plan Ahead
One of the easiest ways that you can avoid badly eating when you’re on the move is to plan your dietary options in advance. If you’ll be attending a lunch meeting, look up the menu first – are there diet-friendly and healthy options for you? Can you place an order for a healthy item in advance? If you know that you’ll be taking a long road trip, do you know of places to stop for food along the way other than gas stations? The more you know about what will be available, the easier it will be to mitigate bad decisions.


Stick to Your Guns
In the event that you haven’t planned your food options in advance and hunger sets in, stick to your guns. If it will be a four-hour flight to your next destination where healthy food is available, do you really need that Snicker’s bar? Or can you stick out the four hours? Unless you have a medical condition that requires you to eat frequently, try intermittent fasting – doing so may have major benefits, including disease prevention and weight loss.


Pack Healthy Snacks
Being busy or on-the-go doesn’t meant that you cannot eat; instead, it just means you need to have the foresight to eat well. An easy remedy is simply to pack healthy snacks. Some great snack options when traveling include:

Raw veggies;
Hummus;
An apple or banana;
A handful of nuts; and

Eating healthy and choosing the right foods isn’t always easy. Eating right is even more difficult when you’re bombarded by advertisements for seemingly healthy foods. After all, if it says ‘low-fat,’ it’s got to be good for you, right? Wrong. Unfortunately, many foods that are promoted as being good for you may actually be harming your weight loss or health efforts. Here are three common snacks that are often thought to be “healthy,” but should really be avoided.

1. Cereal, Granola, and Protein Bars

Most cereal bars, granola bars, and protein bars are loaded with some majorly bad-for-you ingredients. These include:

Artificial sweeteners;
Corn syrup;
Grains; and
Preservatives.

And that’s just to name a few! Consider this: many granola or protein bars contain as much sugar as does candy – is that really what you want to be eating to promote good health? 2. Yogurt

This conclusion is based off of the findings of Dr. Eran Elinav, who demonstrated that certain diseases—such as diabetes and obesity—are linked to changes in the microbiome; artificial sweeteners alter the gut microbiome. Another study showed that consumption of artificial sweeteners was linked to a 36 percent increased risk of metabolic syndrome, and a 67 percent increased risk of diabetes.

It is not just diabetes and obesity that are linked to the consumption of fake sugars; cancer, cardiovascular problems, migraines, joint pain, and a slew of other health complications are also associated with eating artificial sweeteners.
