artificial sweetnerThose who are trying to slim down or maintain good health will often make a conscious effort to cut out sugar. However, these same people do not always make an effort to cut out sweetness. As such, many people will turn to artificial sugars, like aspartame, as a way to enjoy the taste of sugar without any added calories. But artificial sweeteners are associated with their fair share of health problems, too. Here’s why:

Artificial Sweeteners Affect Body’s Blood Sugar

Contrary to popular and widespread belief, artificial sweeteners actually do have an affect on the body’s own blood sugar levels, meaning that they aren’t the key for diabetics as they were once thought to be. This conclusion is based off of the findings of Dr. Eran Elinav, who demonstrated that certain diseases—such as diabetes and obesity—are linked to changes in the microbiome; artificial sweeteners alter the gut microbiome. Another study showed that consumption of artificial sweeteners was linked to a 36 percent increased risk of metabolic syndrome, and a 67 percent increased risk of diabetes.

Fake Sugars Are Linked to Health Risks

It is not just diabetes and obesity that are linked to the consumption of fake sugars; cancer, cardiovascular problems, migraines, joint pain, and a slew of other health complications are also associated with eating artificial sweeteners. To be clear, it seems as if artificial sugars have no health benefits. Rather than helping people to lose weight, they are associated with weight gain; rather than helping people to improve health, they are associated with an increased risk of disease.

A Safer Alternative to Fake Sugar

So if artificial sweeteners are out, what’s left? Eating too much processed sugar is also linked to a host of health problems. You’re probably wondering, “If I can’t eat real or fake sugar, what can I eat?

That’s where Sweets Gone Raw comes in. At Sweets Gone Raw, we never use artificial sugars. Instead, we derive our sweetness from nature ingredients, like dates and coconuts. This way, you still get to enjoy the sweetness of sugar without putting your health at risk.
