What is gluten?
First things first: what is gluten? Gluten is a type of protein that’s water-soluble and that’s found in a variety of grains. To be specific, gluten can be found in:
- Oats; and
But shying away from grains doesn’t mean that you’ll be free from gluten; due to its unique characteristics—it’s what makes bread ‘doughy’—it’s often found in a variety of other products too, ranging from salad dressings to chewing gum.
The Effect Gluten Has on the Body
Gluten has a varying effect on the body depending on each person’s unique health profile. For those with the most severe gluten intolerance, Celiac disease is the result. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that’s characterized by damage to the small intestine. Side effects of Celiac disease can range from gastrointestinal complications to muscular skeletal complications to central nervous system complications.
However, even those who don’t have Celiac disease may still have sensitivity to gluten. For many, the protein initiates an allergic reaction of sorts in the body, leading to severe inflammation (this can mostly be blamed on the lectins, phytic acid, and gliadins found within gluten). Inflammation can in turn lead to:
- Joint pain;
- Mental health problems;
- Acid reflux;
- Skin problems; and
- Weight gain.
For many, sensitivity to gluten is so minor that’s it’s not even noticeable until gluten is removed from the diet. To test whether or not you have gluten sensitivity, try going gluten-free for a minimum of two weeks.
Choosing Gluten-free Foods
Finding gluten-free foods can be challenging. And, simply replacing gluten-containing products with other processed foods isn’t a good choice either; these foods can also be inflammatory, and often contain strange chemicals and high amounts of sugar.
